Why Are Vaccinations So Important?

Vaccinations are a safe and effective way of protecting your family against serious diseases. They work by preparing your body’s immune system to fight off future infections, preventing illnesses that can cause severe health problems. Keeping immunisations current is a cornerstone of family health.

Staying up-to-date with your jabs is especially important for:

  • Children: The routine immunisation schedule gives little ones vital protection against common childhood illnesses right from the start.
  • Teenagers: Boosters like the 3-in-1 vaccine are offered to maintain immunity against diseases such as tetanus, diphtheria, and polio.
  • Travellers: Before you jet off, it’s wise to get vaccinated against diseases that are more common in other parts of the world, especially if it has been over 10 years since your last booster.
  • Adults: Certain vaccines, like those for flu and shingles, are recommended for specific age groups or for individuals with particular health conditions to ensure ongoing protection.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Our vaccines are for both adults and children. The right ones for you will depend on your age, health, job, and travel plans. Dr Summerhill will help create a personal plan for you and your family.

  • No referral is needed, but a consultation with Dr Summerhill is required so we can understand your needs and make sure the vaccine is suitable for you.

  • It varies. Some vaccines, like a tetanus booster, are just a single jab. Others, such as HPV or Hepatitis B, need a course of two or three injections for full, lasting protection.

  • Most side effects are very mild and don’t last long. You might notice a bit of soreness or redness where you had the injection, or feel slightly under the weather with a headache or mild temperature. Serious reactions are extremely rare.

  • Yes, if you have a fever or feel too poorly to go about your day, it’s best to wait until you’re feeling better before having your vaccination.

  • This depends on where you’re going, for how long, and what you’ll be doing. We recommend getting advice for travel to parts of Africa, Asia, and Eastern Europe, or if you’ll be somewhere with limited medical facilities.

  • We offer Gardasil 9, which protects against the human papillomavirus (HPV). It’s suitable for both males and females and can be given from age 9 all the way up to 45.
