Cardiac Health Screening
Cardiac Health Screening
Private Heart Health Check (Cardiac Screening) in Manchester
Your heart health is one of the most important foundations of your overall wellbeing. Many cardiac conditions develop gradually and without clear symptoms, which is why early detection matters. A private heart health check offers clarity, reassurance and the chance to take proactive steps long before problems arise.
At Summerhill Health, our cardiac screening service is consultant-led, overseen by Consultant Cardiologist Dr Matthew Kahn. This means your results are reviewed by a specialist with extensive experience in heart failure, arrhythmias and advanced cardiac diagnostics. You will receive a thorough assessment supported by high-quality testing, clear explanations and personalised guidance tailored to your risk factors, symptoms and medical history.
Understanding your heart health
Designed to be preventative, this screening helps identify early signs of cardiovascular disease. It includes physical assessments, comprehensive blood tests, ECG findings, home monitoring and an overall assessment of your cardiovascular risk. Your results are explained carefully during your consultation with Dr Kahn, with personalised guidance to help you make informed decisions about your long-term wellbeing.
Our appointments are calm and unhurried, giving you time to ask questions and understand each part of the process. Whether you are experiencing symptoms, have a family history of heart disease or simply want reassurance, this service offers expert insight and a clear plan you can trust.

What We Test and Why
Every element of your cardiac screening has been selected to give you and Dr Kahn the clearest possible picture of your heart health.
Physical Assessment
- Height, weight and BMI – Excess weight increases strain on the heart and is a key modifiable risk factor for cardiovascular disease.
- Blood pressure – High blood pressure is one of the most important risk factors for heart attack and stroke, often without symptoms.
- Heart rate – Resting heart rate provides insight into your cardiovascular fitness and can indicate underlying rhythm problems.
- Grip strength – Research shows grip strength is a strong predictor of cardiovascular health and overall mortality risk. It reflects your general physical condition and muscle health.
- Spirometry – Measures how well your lungs are working. Lung function is closely linked to heart health, and reduced lung capacity can indicate or contribute to cardiovascular problems.
Blood Tests
- Lipid profile – Measures your cholesterol levels including total cholesterol, LDL (harmful), HDL (protective) and triglycerides. Essential for assessing your risk of arterial disease.
- BNP (B-type natriuretic peptide) – A marker released when the heart is under strain. Elevated levels can indicate heart failure or other cardiac stress, often before symptoms develop.
- hs CRP (high-sensitivity C-reactive protein) – Detects low-level inflammation in your body. Chronic inflammation is an independent risk factor for heart disease, even when cholesterol levels are normal.
- Lp(a) / Lipoprotein A – An inherited risk marker that increases cardiovascular risk regardless of lifestyle factors. Many people don’t know they have elevated Lp(a), and it isn’t routinely tested on the NHS.
- U&Es (urea and electrolytes) – Assesses kidney function, which is closely linked to cardiovascular health. The kidneys and heart work together, and problems with one often affect the other.
- FBC (full blood count) – Checks for anaemia and other blood disorders that can affect heart function or cause symptoms like fatigue and breathlessness.
- TFTs (thyroid function tests) – Both overactive and underactive thyroid conditions can affect your heart rhythm and cardiovascular health.
- LFTs (liver function tests) – Liver health affects how your body processes cholesterol and other factors relevant to cardiovascular risk.
- HbA1c – Screens for diabetes and pre-diabetes. Elevated blood sugar significantly increases cardiovascular risk, and many people have undiagnosed diabetes.
Cardiac Risk Calculation
- QRISK3 – A validated algorithm that calculates your 10-year risk of heart attack or stroke based on multiple factors including age, cholesterol, blood pressure, family history and other heart conditions. This gives you a clear, personalised understanding of your cardiovascular risk.
ECG and Heart Rhythm Assessment
- Resting ECG – Records your heart’s electrical activity to identify rhythm abnormalities, signs of previous heart damage, or other cardiac conditions.
- 3-day ECG tracing (home monitoring) – Many heart rhythm problems are intermittent and won’t show up on a standard ECG. Extended monitoring over three days significantly increases the chance of detecting arrhythmias such as atrial fibrillation, which increases stroke risks.
Blood Pressure Monitoring
- 24-hour blood pressure monitoring (home kit) – A single blood pressure reading can be misleading. Monitoring over 24 hours captures your true blood pressure pattern, including overnight readings, and identifies conditions like white coat hypertension or masked hypertension.
His manner gave me a great deal of confidence and put my wife’s mind at ease.
From the beginning of my first appointment, Dr Kahn took the time to make me feel that my care was his top priority. I was pretty poorly when I met Dr Kahn but his manner gave me a great deal of confidence and it put my wife’s mind at ease.

Yes. This is a consultant-led service. Your results are interpreted by a Consultant Cardiologist with specialist expertise in heart conditions, offering a level of expertise beyond routine private health checks where results are typically reviewed by a GP or nurse practitioner.
A cardiologist like Dr Kahn has years of specialist training in interpreting cardiac tests and identifying subtle abnormalities that a generalist might miss. He can also put your results in context, explain what they mean for you specifically and recommend appropriate next steps if anything requires further investigation.
Only if clinically indicated. Dr Kahn will explain whether additional imaging is recommended based on your results and overall risk profile. An echocardiogram (heart ultrasound) and CT coronary angiogram (detailed imaging of your heart arteries) can be arranged if needed.
Consultations typically last 60 minutes for new patients and 20 to 30 minutes for existing patients, giving you plenty of time to discuss your concerns in detail. More comprehensive health assessments may take longer, especially if blood tests are included.
Most results are ready ahead of your follow-up appointment. Once your home monitoring is complete and blood test results have returned, we’ll arrange your consultation with Dr Kahn. He will go through everything with you in detail.
Dr Kahn will explain any findings clearly and discuss what they mean for your health. If further investigation or treatment is needed, he will recommend appropriate next steps, which might include additional imaging, medication, lifestyle changes, or referral to other specialists. You won’t be left wondering what to do next.
