Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs)

Private STI Screening and Treatment in Manchester and Cheshire

“I’d rather not sit in a walk-in clinic for this.”

“I want a same-week appointment and a result I can trust.”

“I’ve had a recent risk and I just want to know where I stand.”

Sexual health is part of general health, and most people would rather sort it quickly, accurately, and in private. At Summerhill Health, we offer private STI screening and treatment for women and men in a single, discreet appointment at our Hale clinic. The service is led by Dr Natalie Summerhill (MBBS, RCGP 2015, DRCOG, DFSRH), and follows current BASHH and NICE guidance for sexual health testing in primary care.

We test for the four most common STIs in the UK using a combination of urine and blood tests: chlamydia, gonorrhoea, syphilis, and HIV. Where appropriate, we can treat chlamydia and gonorrhoea in clinic. If your result needs onward referral, we coordinate with specialist GUM services so you’re not left to navigate it on your own.

Our service sits alongside our wider health screening and private blood test appointments. It’s easy to reach our clinic in Hale from Altrincham, Wilmslow, Knutsford, Manchester city centre, and across Cheshire.

Book your STI screening appointment

You can book directly. There’s no need for an initial consultation first, and we’ll confirm which tests are right for you on the day, based on your history and any symptoms. If you’re unsure whether enough time has passed since a possible exposure for a test to be accurate, you can book a 30-minute advice appointment with Dr Summerhill first (see pricing below).

New patients seeking longer-term health advice must book an initial consultation. This isn’t required for single-issue GP appointments, blood tests or contraception services.

I can’t recommend Dr Summerhill highly enough.

I can’t recommend Dr Summerhill highly enough. From the moment you walk in, she makes you feel completely at ease. She takes the time to listen carefully, never rushes appointments, and explains everything in a clear and reassuring way.

What really stands out is her genuine care and compassion — you feel like you’re being treated as a person, not just a patient. Her attention to detail and professionalism are exceptional, and I always leave feeling confident and well looked after.

What To Expect

An STI screening appointment at Summerhill Health takes around 30 minutes and is designed to be straightforward, judgement-free, and complete in one visit wherever possible. Here’s how it works:

  1. 1

    Your confidential consultation

You’ll meet with Dr Summerhill in a private consultation room. We’ll talk through your sexual history, any symptoms, recent partners, and any specific exposures or concerns you’d like tested for. We use this conversation to agree on the right test combination for you, rather than running tests you don’t need.

For most patients, the right starting point is a four-infection screen: chlamydia, gonorrhoea, syphilis, and HIV. We may adjust this based on your history, recent travel, or symptoms.

  2. 2

    Sample collection

Depending on the tests we agree, you’ll provide:

    • A urine sample (first-catch urine, ideally at least one hour after you last passed urine) for chlamydia and gonorrhoea testing.
    • A blood sample drawn in clinic for syphilis and HIV testing.
    • A vulvovaginal swab as an alternative to urine for female patients, where preferred.

All samples are processed by an accredited UK laboratory using NAAT (nucleic acid amplification testing) for chlamydia and gonorrhoea, and current serology assays for syphilis and HIV.

  3. 3

    Your results

We contact you securely as soon as your results are back. You can choose how you’d like to be contacted (phone, email, or secure portal) at the time of your appointment. If everything is clear, we’ll confirm in writing and discuss any follow-up screening intervals if relevant.

If a result comes back positive, we’ll book a short follow-up appointment to talk it through, agree treatment, and plan any onward steps. There’s no waiting alone with a result you don’t understand.

  4. 4

    Treatment, retesting, and onward care

Where a positive result needs treatment, we handle it in clinic wherever clinically appropriate:

    • Chlamydia: treated with a seven-day course of doxycycline (first-line per BASHH).
    • Gonorrhoea: treated with a single intramuscular injection of ceftriaxone, administered in clinic.
    • Syphilis and HIV: referred to specialist NHS GUM or HIV services for ongoing care, with our support in arranging the referral.
    • Complications such as pelvic pain alongside an STI: best managed by a specialist sexual health (GUM) service or hospital, and we’ll refer you promptly where this applies.

We’ll also discuss partner notification (which can be done anonymously through NHS services if you’d prefer), arrange any test of cure that’s needed, and book your retesting interval where appropriate.

  5. 5

Window periods (when to test after a possible exposure)

Every STI has a different window period. That’s the time after exposure required for a test to reliably detect the infection. Testing too early can produce a false negative, so timing matters.

    • Chlamydia and gonorrhoea: reliable from around two weeks after exposure.
    • Syphilis: initial test reliable from around four weeks, with a definitive result from 12 weeks.
    • HIV (4th-generation antigen/antibody test): reliable from 28 to 45 days after exposure, with a definitive result at 45 days.

If you’ve had a very recent exposure and are concerned about HIV, contact us or your nearest sexual health service quickly. Post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) must be started within 72 hours of exposure and is accessed through NHS emergency sexual health or A&E services, not through private screening.

I recently visited Summerhill Health and had a really positive experience.

I recently visited Summerhill Health and had a really positive experience. Dr Natalie Summerhill and Kathy, the Practice Manager, were incredibly compassionate, understanding, and supportive during what was a very stressful time for me.

They made me feel listened to, reassured, and cared for throughout the whole process. I’m very grateful for their kindness and professionalism—thank you so much.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Who is STI screening for?

STI screening is appropriate for anyone who is sexually active and would like reassurance, has had a new partner, has had a possible exposure, has symptoms, or is starting a new relationship. We see women and men of all ages, and there’s no minimum or maximum age for testing.

  • Do I need to have symptoms to be tested?

No, and in fact most people who test positive haven’t noticed anything different. Many STIs sit quietly for weeks or months after exposure, which is part of why they pass between partners so easily. NHS guidance estimates that roughly 7 in 10 women and 5 in 10 men with chlamydia never develop signs they’d recognise, and HIV can stay silent for years before causing any noticeable change. Testing is the only reliable way to know where you stand, particularly after a new partner or any change in your circumstances.

  • Which infections do you test for?

We test for the four most common UK STIs: chlamydia, gonorrhoea, syphilis, and HIV. Chlamydia and gonorrhoea are detected via urine (or vulvovaginal swab); syphilis and HIV via a blood test. If you’d like testing for other infections (such as hepatitis B, hepatitis C, herpes, or trichomoniasis), please let us know at the time of booking and we’ll confirm what we can offer.

  • Can I be treated in the clinic if I test positive?

Yes, for chlamydia and gonorrhoea. Chlamydia is treated with a seven-day course of doxycycline (first-line per BASHH guidance). Gonorrhoea is treated with a single ceftriaxone injection given in clinic, also per BASHH guidance. For syphilis and HIV, we coordinate onward referral to specialist NHS services for ongoing treatment, and we’ll support you through that process.

  • How long do results take?

Most results are available quickly, typically from the next working day up to 48 hours. We’ll contact you securely as soon as they’re back, using the method you chose at your appointment.

  • How confidential is this service?

Fully confidential. Your STI screening is not shared with your NHS GP, employer or insurer without your written consent. Results, correspondence, and any prescriptions stay within our clinic records and are handled in line with GMC confidentiality guidance and UK GDPR.

  • Will this go my NHS record?

No. Unless you specifically ask us to write to your NHS GP, no information is shared. If a positive result requires onward NHS referral (for example, for syphilis or HIV care), we’ll discuss exactly what information needs to be shared and seek your consent before doing so.

  • How does partner notification work?

If you test positive for an STI, current and recent sexual partners may need to be tested and treated to prevent reinfection and onward transmission. We’ll talk through your options at your follow-up appointment. You can notify partners yourself, or use the anonymous NHS partner notification service, which contacts partners on your behalf without naming you. We’ll guide you to the right route and support you through it.

  • What’s the difference between private STI screening and NHS sexual health clinics?

NHS sexual health clinics offer excellent, free STI testing and treatment, and we’d always encourage you to use them where they’re accessible. The advantages of private screening with Summerhill Health are same-week appointments, continuity with a named GP, a single 30-minute appointment that covers consultation, testing, and a clear results plan, and no shared records with your NHS GP. The right choice depends on your priorities around access, privacy, and convenience.

  • How often should I be screened?

For most sexually active adults, an annual screen is a reasonable baseline. If you have new or multiple partners, are in a non-monogamous relationship, or have had a possible exposure, more frequent testing (every three to six months) is sensible. We’ll agree the right interval with you at your appointment.

  • I have no symptoms but I’m worried after a recent encounter. When should I test?

If the encounter was within the last two weeks, testing for chlamydia and gonorrhoea is reliable now, but syphilis and HIV results won’t be definitive until later (see window periods above). We’d usually recommend an initial screen now and a follow-up screen at 45 days for full HIV and syphilis clearance. If you’re worried about HIV exposure within the last 72 hours, contact NHS emergency sexual health services or A&E about PEP straight away.

  • Do you offer testing for trichomoniasis, herpes, hepatitis, or HPV?

These aren’t part of our standard four-infection screen, but we can arrange additional testing on request. Trichomoniasis is tested via swab or urine. Herpes is generally only tested when active sores are present (via swab). Hepatitis B and C are tested via blood. HPV testing is offered as part of our cervical screening service rather than as part of STI screening. Please let us know what you’d like covered at the time of booking.

  • Can I bring my partner?

Yes. We’re happy to see partners together or in back-to-back appointments. Each person has their own confidential consultation and results process, but the practical side (timing, treatment, retesting) can be coordinated.

  • Where is your clinic, and how do I get there?

Our clinic is based in Hale, in the heart of South Manchester. We’re easy to reach from Altrincham, Bowdon, Hale Barns, Wilmslow, Knutsford, Alderley Edge, Stockport, Cheadle, Sale, and Manchester city centre. There’s parking nearby, and the clinic is a short walk from Hale train station.
